What counts as a span?
A span is a single traced operation — one LLM call, one tool invocation, or one retrieval step. A typical agent conversation produces 5–20 spans depending on complexity. You can inspect every span in the TruLayer dashboard with full input/output, latency, and token counts.
Do I need a credit card to start?
No. The Starter tier is free and does not require a credit card. A card is only required when you upgrade to Pro.
When is a credit card required?
Only at the point you upgrade to Pro. Before that, Starter gives you 1M spans, 2.5K evals, 3 seats, and 30-day retention with a hard cap — no payment details needed.
Can I bring my own eval model?
Yes. BYOK (bring-your-own-key) is required for premium eval models on the Team tier. Point TruLayer at your OpenAI, Anthropic, or other provider key and we meter against your contract, not ours.
How does cancellation work?
You can cancel anytime from the billing portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep full access until then. After the period ends, your account moves to the Starter tier. Your data is retained for 30 days at the previous plan's retention limit before Starter pruning kicks in.
Is cancellation the same as downgrading?
No. A downgrade moves you to a lower paid tier and takes effect immediately (prorated). A cancellation ends your paid subscription at the billing period boundary and returns you to Starter. Use the billing portal to downgrade; contact us if you need to cancel mid-period.
How do evals count against the monthly limit?
Each evaluation run counts as one eval regardless of the number of metrics scored. The monthly limit resets on your billing anniversary. Overages are billed at the rate shown in the comparison table — $8 per 1,000 on Pro, $7 per 1,000 on Team. Starter has a hard block at 2.5K — no overage billing, just a cap.
What happens to my data if I downgrade?
Your existing traces and evals are not deleted immediately. You have 30 days at your previous plan's retention limit before data older than the Starter 30-day window is pruned. Data within the Starter retention window is always accessible.
